Study Buddy Program

In response to COVID-19 and the shift to remote learning, Hello Neighbor is supporting refugee students and their families by providing virtual one-on-one tutoring and online learning support.

When COVID-19 hit, it became clear that learning remotely was difficult for everybody. Many Hello Neighbor families expressed concerns around helping their children have a successful school year. Here at Hello Neighbor, we want to provide that extra bit of support and encouragement for refugee youth so that they don’t fall behind and can succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Individual volunteers who are current or recent students themselves, are paired with refugee children to help them navigate questions around virtual learning. Tutors help the refugee students with things like understanding the virtual classroom, submitting homework assignments, sending questions to teachers, staying on top of their homework, and providing help in specific subjects as needed. Tutors meet with their refugee students weekly via whatsapp video. Tutors support between 1-3 students for a minimum of three hours per week in total.
