New Study Buddy Program Launch!

Hello Neighbor launches its newest program in response to the growing need for learning support among refugee students.

November 5, 2020

It’s no secret that times have been trying for many, and that includes our refugee youth, especially those navigating online school while actively learning another language.

In response to our families’ concerns for their children’s education during this pandemic, Hello Neighbor launched the Study Buddy Program on October 7th! This program is in its first semester which will run through December 2020 and then take a short break before jumping into the spring semester. We are seeking to expand our reach in the coming semester to be able to offer tutoring services to more refugee students. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a tutor and helping us expand, please see more details in the section below.

Currently, Study Buddy is catering to middle school and high school age students in the Carnegie and Duquesne/West Mifflin school districts, and we are set to expand our reach for the spring semester. As of now, we have 10 tutors meeting with 15 students twice a week for 45 minute sessions!

It’s been amazing watching students engage with their tutors every week and we’ve already witnessed the difference 1:1 education assistance can make in a student’s life. For example, when asked what went well during his week, Belal a current Study Buddy student said:

” I understood the homework this week with [my tutor] Myron!”

We are eager to grow this new and impactful program and appreciate everyone who has spread the word and encouraged people to apply for volunteer tutor positions!

Are you interested in becoming a tutor or learning more about the Study Buddy Program? You can fill out our tutor application below or email our Community Engagement Assistant, Shalom Haileselassie, at with any questions!
