Pittsburgh: a City of Welcoming
Pittsburgh is the city we love today because of the generations of immigrants who chose to call it home. In the early 1900s, immigrants made up over a quarter of our population, and newcomers have shaped our history from the start.
Today, that legacy continues. About 9% of Pittsburghers are immigrants, and for the past 9 years, Hello Neighbor has walked alongside our new neighbors to make sure they have the support systems they need to thrive.
In just this past year, we supported over 1500 new neighbors from 45 countries. We’re proud to be part of the community of care that led to Pittsburgh’s recognition as a 3-star Certified Welcoming Community: a true testament to the spirit of belonging that colors our past, informs our present, and guides us to the future we want to create.
All eyes are on Pittsburgh this Spring as hundreds of thousands of visitors pour in for the 2026 NFL Draft, putting our city’s famous hospitality on full display. We’re excited to share our home with the world, and we believe that our immigrant communities are at the heart of what makes Pittsburgh so special. While we welcome these new visitors, we want to make sure that the same energy of welcoming is also extended to the immigrant families who live, work, and go to school right here in our neighborhoods.
Make a Gift to Support Your Neighbors
It’s Hello Neighbor’s 9th Birthday, and the best gift we could ask for is your support. In the current landscape, the work of welcoming comes with more obstacles than ever, from rising food insecurity for refugee families to unprecedented intimidation from immigration enforcement. Your gift provides essential support that makes a real difference for our neighbors, from emergency food relief, to compassionate legal guidance, to English classes and community events that help families feel truly welcome in their new home.
Thanks to a generous match, the first $9000 donated will be doubled! Make your gift today to help us unlock the full match.
Thank you for standing with us as we celebrate 9 years of welcome; your support will help ensure that we can continue this work for more years to come.
