MISSION

Hello Neighbor works to improve the lives of recently resettled refugee and immigrant families by matching them with dedicated neighbors to guide and support them in their new lives.

VISION

Hello Neighbor envisions a welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant Pittsburgh and America, whose newest neighbors can realize their dreams of success and prosperity. We aspire to see communities where everyone is valued for their diverse perspectives and are empowered to rebuild their lives with dignity and respect.

Our VALUES

REFUGEE-FIRST MINDSET

We believe that all of our work should start with the best interests of the refugees that we serve as voiced by them.

Illustration of traveling family carrying their belongings

CROSS-CULTURAL SENSITIVITY

We believe in having a thoughtful approach toward the refugee families we support. We know the best answers come from really listening to the needs of the community and that trauma-informed care impacts programmatic support.

DIGNIFIED STORYTELLING

We believe in protecting the privacy and dignity of refugee families by sharing their stories in a respectful way. We strive to be mindful of and sensitive to the journeys and trauma these stories may represent.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

We believe the most important aspect of our program is the human connection and trust that comes from mentor/mentee relationships. Listening and connecting over shared experiences helps to foster a community that transcends cultures.

INCLUSIVE SUPPORT

We believe in welcoming and standing beside all refugees and immigrants— regardless of race, religion, age, national origin, citizenship status or sexual orientation—and honoring their experiences and voices with a spirit of acceptance and belonging.

Letter from Our Founder & CEO

Sloane and Davidson and her family smiling

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As I reflect on the past year at Hello Neighbor, I am deeply moved by the collective impact we have made together. This year has been a testament to the strength of our community, the resilience of those we serve, and the unwavering support from each of you.

From our expanded team and innovative programs, to the countless stories of transformation and growth, our journey has been marked by significant milestones. We have continued to forge meaningful connections between recently resettled refugee and immigrant families and dedicated neighbors, creating a tapestry of support that spans across Allegheny County and the United States, through our work in the Hello Neighbor Network.

It is with great pride that I share with you this year’s impact report. In it, you will find highlights of our key achievements and a snapshot of the lives touched by our work. The stories of our mentors and mentees, the successes of our educational and resettlement programs, the work of grassroots organizations from around the country impacted by our national work and the generous support from our volunteers and partners are all woven together to illustrate the heart of Hello Neighbor.

What makes me smile is seeing the incredible resilience of our families and the kindness of neighbors who step up every day to welcome them with open arms.

Our mission remains clear - improve the lives of refugees and immigrants by fostering a welcoming community where they can thrive. Our vision is to see a vibrant and inclusive society where everyone is valued and empowered to rebuild their lives with dignity.

On a more personal note, this is my eighth year since the founding of Hello Neighbor and it is amazing what we have accomplished and what we are excited about as we look ahead. This organization, like many others, was created after the 2016 election seeing a real need for how to stand up and support our newest neighbors. Each year that has passed has brought new successes, challenges, and stories to tell about how love is stronger than hate and what we can do when we are in community with one another.

What makes me smile is seeing the incredible resilience of our families and the kindness of neighbors who step up every day to welcome them with open arms.

Since Day 1, we have seen the kindness of caring neighbors and the resilience of our new neighbors firsthand, and it’s clear how those relationships truly impact communities for the better. The connections formed are life-changing, not just for the refugees and immigrants we serve but for the volunteers and supporters who witness the power of a welcoming, inclusive community.

As we move forward, I am excited about the future of Hello Neighbor and the continued vibrance and resilience of those we have the pleasure of working with.. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey. Your support, dedication, and belief in our mission make everything we do possible.

Forever yours in community,

Education

STUDY BUDDY: Refugee and immigrant students in grades 6-12 get personalized, virtual tutoring from local volunteer tutors for two hours each week for sessions. Events including in-person sessions and activities help strengthen the bonds with the students and tutors!

Little Neighbors: One of our new programs connects families to early childhood education resources and helps them navigate the application and enrollment process, which can be a challenge for families who are new to the United States and those with limited English. We address a crucial need for our newest neighbors and their children by helping families foster their children’s development with access to resources and support.

LANGUAGE ACCESS: Ensuring equal access to our services for all refugees and immigrants, regardless of English proficiency or native language. Our staff advocates for our client’s access to interpretation in medical appointments, police encounters, family-school communications, local government, and more. Volunteer Spotlight

“Discovering an agency whose clients hail from other countries AND are refugees made choosing Hello Neighbor as the organization where I could be of service in the community an easy one. It is gratifying to know that my efforts, and those of fellow volunteers, are helping to ease the transition of recently arrived refugees here in Pittsburgh. And the staff have been so very welcoming.”
