On April 21, 2022, President Biden introduced Uniting for Ukraine, which provides a pathway for Ukrainian citizens and their immediate family members to come to the United States and stay temporarily in a two year period of parole. So far, the U.S. has welcomed over 100,000 Ukrainian citizens through the following pathways:

Temporary Immigrant Visas 47,000
Private Sponsorship Program 30,000
U.S - Mexico Border (Asylum Seekers) More than 22,000
Traditional refugee system 500
Total Approx. 100,000

Ukrainian Refugee Approval Process

The most unique part of the Ukrainian refugee process is private sponsorship through Uniting for Ukraine called Sponsor Circles. Ukrainians with a U.S.-based sponsor may receive temporary status in the U.S. for two years as a Ukrainian Humanitarian Parolee (UHP). UHPs have protected status, so they can live and work in the U.S. Unless another law is passed, UHPs must apply for and win asylum to receive legal permanent residence.

Hello Neighbor can only access Ukrainian Humanitarian Parolees (UHP) clients through referrals. That’s where YOU and the broader Pittsburgh community come in!

We are celebrating our 8th year of supporting our immigrant and refugee neighbors!

At Hello Neighbor we are committed to helping our refugee and immigrant neighbors realize their dreams of success and prosperity from arrival to belonging. We have been there every step of the way as our newest neighbors build their home in a new city, ensuring they have access to everything from furnished housing to a friendly and caring neighbor they can connect with through our activities, and we will continue to be there if you help us!

As we mark this milestone, we’re celebrating the incredible impact we’ve made together—and looking ahead to what we can accomplish in the year to come. Over the past few months, we have been navigating unprecedented challenges to our work and to the families that we serve. It is more crucial than ever that we come together to support our immigrant and refugee neighbors.

It’s because of the generosity of people like you that we are able to connect new neighbors to resources and relationships that make Pittsburgh a welcoming new home. This year, we hope to inspire at least 50 neighbors to come together and make a donation to support our new neighbors.

  • Match 27 families with caring neighbors through our Mentorship program
  • Support and celebrate the births of 40 babies through our Smart Start program

Together, we can continue building a more welcoming Pittsburgh—and a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone.
