Hello Neighbor is Partnering with Bethany Christian Services on a Program for Afghan Survivors Impacted by Combat
In February 2023, recognizing the unique experiences and needs of Afghans who experienced combat-related trauma, Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) launched the Services to Afghan Survivors Impacted by Combat (SASIC) program. ORR designed SASIC to support eligible Afghans and their families to address and overcome severe and long-lasting traua, so they can achieve their physical, social, emotional, and economic goals. Bethany Christian Services is leading the local SASIC program in partnership with Hello Neighbor to offer holistic, strengths-based, and trauma-informed services. Services will be provided directly and/or through referrals to partners or affiliates. In addition to directly providing services, Bethany Christian and Hello Neighbor will work with agencies across the region to build up their culturally and linguistically appropriate services for our new Afghan neighbors. Services and Activities May Include:
Direct case management services, including medical, psychological, and social work services
For those outside service areas, options for telehealth and remote delivery
Appropriate and tailored services for specific genders and ages, including for children and adolescents
Creation of a national network of culturally responsive providers specialized in meeting the needs of those who have experienced trauma
Organizational capacity development to increase local support and ensure the sustainability of services to survivors
Community engagement and education activities to facilitate identification of survivors and build community awareness to assist with their healing
Culturally tailored, intensive pregnancy support

Working from our Pittsburgh, PA office, the Medical Case Aide will support Hello Neighbor’s Services for Afghan Survivors Impacted by Combat (SASIC) program providing comprehensive medical case management to local Afghan families. The Medical Case Aide will work within a dual-agency case management team to support eligible families for at least 1 year and up to 3 years. This will include providing physical healthcare coordination, medical appointment accompaniment, extended cultural orientation, and advocacy in accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The Medical Case Aide will work alongside a comprehensive case management team to provide physical healthcare support to clients of all ages. This role will work closely with the Medical Case Manager to assess families for medical needs and develop comprehensive service plans that aim to address social determinants of health through accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
Working from our Pittsburgh, PA office, the Medical Case Manager will provide medical case management for clients enrolled in Hello Neighbor’s Services for Afghan Survivors Impacted by Combat (SASIC) program providing comprehensive medical case management to local Afghan families. The Medical Case Manager will work within a dual-agency case management team to support eligible families for at least 1 year and up to 3 years. This will include providing physical healthcare coordination, medical appointment accompaniment, extended cultural orientation, and advocacy in accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The Medical Case Manager will work alongside a comprehensive case management team to provide assessments and intakes, and create comprehensive service plans to assist families to in addressing acute and chronic health conditions. provide physical healthcare support to clients of all ages. This role will work closely with the Medical Case Manager to assess families for medical needs and develop comprehensive service plans that aim to address social determinants of health through accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
Working as a contractor in collaboration with our team in our Pittsburgh, PA office, the Medical Director Advisor will work in an advisory role within Hello Neighbor’s Services for Afghan Survivors Impacted by Combat (SASIC) program providing comprehensive medical case management to local Afghan families. The Medical Director Advisor's work will inform a dual-agency case management team supporting Afghan families in the region. The program will support up to 125 eligible individuals for at least 1 year and up to 3 years. This will include providing physical healthcare coordination, medical appointment accompaniment, extended cultural orientation, and advocacy in accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The Medical Director Advisor’s primary role will be to work collaboratively with the program leads providing expert medical advice and guidance to the program team in addressing acute and chronic physical healthcare needs. Additionally, the Medical Director Advisor will assist in creating a regional network of medical providers who excel in providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services to the Afghan community. The Medical Director Advisor will act as the key medical informant in an advisory role to ensure the program team is guiding families through the healthcare system effectively and efficiently. The Medical Director Advisor will be available to provide advice and guidance to key program staff on an ongoing basis through pre-scheduled meetings and other identified and preferred touchpoints.
